My single goal

Although there are many ways I would like to change the way this country is managed I think the main problem with the way things work now is party politics. When I vote in the general elections I expect the person I vote for to represent my views, or at least the views of the majority of the people within the area they represent. What I don't like is the fact that MP's are often told how to vote by their "Party Leaders".

I didn't elect the leader of their party did I, did you? So why should someone we didn't elect be telling the person we did elect how to vote? Why is the MP we elected not representing our views? The reason is that many people vote for a particular party rather than for an individual candidate. Many people wont vote for minority partys (such as the Liberals) or independent candidates because they feel it is a wasted vote. Political partys use this situation to control votes. Anyone not "towing the party line" and voting in a way they are told to on certain subjects can have their party membership cancelled, in most cases this will end their political career.

As a consequence what we end up with is elected members answering to a select few party leaders rather than answering to the people who elected them. In my opinion this is very wrong! So my single most important goal is quite simple.

Abolish all political partys

In my opinion the answer is simple. The people within my area elect someone, they try to keep in touch with the wishes of the people who elected them as much as possible and vote in a way that represents our wishes. If the elected member doesn't represent the wishes of their electorates the consequences are quite simple, they wont be re-elected.

Polititians alread tout this as an option for us "if nobody likes what we do then nobody will vote for us". The problem with this is that people would rather vote for a party they are unhappy with in order to prevent another party from taking power that they suspect will do a much worse job. This "better the devil you know" approach to government means that we ultimately end up with no real free choice. I myself have found myself not voting for the person I would like to vote for because I fear that my "wasted vote" will enable someone I don't like to gain the most votes.

When I am the prime minister the first thing I will do is to make political partys illegal. Every representative in the house of commons will be precisely that, a representative, representing the desires and opinions of the people who elected them. There will be no prime-minister position, no chancellor, no foreign minister, nothing. Every change to the way things are currently done will have to go through a proposal and voting system. With no political parties every vote will be a free vote!

How many times has a government done something that the majority of us do not want? Even when people protest in huge numbers the government will continue on the premise that the "silent majority" agree with them. End party politics and our elected representatives will finally be free to vote for what we want!

I think it's time to start voting for the people we want, rather than voting against the people we don't.
